Cui Dongshu Sees China's 2027 Auto Retail Sales Rebounding About 2% After 2026 Dip
CPCA deputy secretary general Cui Dongshu said on October 26 that he expects China's 2026 passenger-car retail sales to reach about 18.5 million units, and that the domestic market could bottom out and recover in 2027 with retail growth of 0% to 5% and a midpoint of about 2%, assuming no unexpected shifts in policy or the external environment. Cui attributed the sharper-than-expected weakness in 2026 to short-term shocks, cost pressures and geopolitical oil-price swings, with the global auto market growing about 1% and China's share at roughly 31%. He forecast 2027 domestic retail growth near 2% and export growth near 10%, as the industry shifts from a 'scale-first' to a 'value-wins' phase and automakers lean on product strength and channel efficiency rather than price cuts.
