German President Experiences China's Smart EVs in Hefei, Underscoring Deepening China-Germany Auto Ties
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on a state visit to China from October 27 to 31, opened his Anhui itinerary in Hefei on October 27, touring the Luogang Park to learn about the city's sustainable-development approach and visiting Volkswagen's local R&D center, where he experienced an intelligent electric vehicle developed in China. The trip highlighted how China-Germany auto cooperation has moved from product exports to joint R&D, technology sharing and local manufacturing. Industry observers note Chinese makers lead in software, supply-chain management and batteries while German firms excel in hardware and design, creating complementary space for collaboration as Chinese brands like Leapmotor, Geely, GAC and XPeng brought 25 brands to the 2026 Paris Motor Show, a record showing.
