National Business Daily reported October 20 that per OpenRouter data for the week of October 12-18, global AI model token calls totaled 164 trillion, down 4.65% week on week; Chinese models accounted for 79.18 trillion tokens (down 8.72%) versus the U.S. at 17.36 trillion (down 8.49%), with Chinese models leading the world for the 25th consecutive week and the top five by calls all Chinese. Analysts noted the data strengthens China's lead in call scale, but the simultaneous global and China-U.S. declines flag demand volatility that cannot be ignored as the race shifts from parameters to calls, cost and scenarios.
