CATL Shares Slide 12% on Earnings Caution but Company Says 2027 Demand Remains Solid
On October 21 CATL's A-share price closed down about 12%, shedding over 100 billion yuan of market value, after its third-quarter report showed record quarterly revenue but a slower profit pace and a third straight quarter of falling gross margin. For the first nine months CATL posted revenue of 442.1 billion yuan, up 56.2% year on year, and net profit of 64.5 billion yuan, up 31.6%, with third-quarter revenue of 165.2 billion yuan setting a single-quarter high. Management pushed back on investor worries about next year's demand, saying global power and storage battery demand may be less pessimistic than the market expects, with rising electrification rates in China, steady European momentum and strong overseas storage demand. CATL also bought back about 800 million yuan of shares that day, part of a repurchase program that has now reached 4.6 billion yuan, signaling confidence in its long-term outlook.
