Don't Be Misled by Token Consumption, Says Economic Daily: China-U.S. Top Model Gap Narrows Below 3%
An Economic Daily commentary argued that focusing only on short-drama token consumption obscures the full picture of Chinese AI. On the model side, the performance gap between the best U.S. and Chinese models has narrowed to less than 3%, and the domestic production rate of compute chips has risen to 37%. On the application side, China has built 35,000 foundational smart factories, and the share of industrial enterprises using large models and agents has climbed to 47.5%. TCL's Huaxing Optoelectronics cut production planning from 7 days to 30 minutes with AI, and CATL deployed over 7,000 inspection points on one line, lowering cell failure rates from one-in-a-million to the billion level. The commentary said China's token cost is falling fast, adoption is growing, and the open-source ecosystem is accumulating, while the United States also faces sustainability pressures.
