CPCA: 2026 Passenger Retail Seen Down 22%, 2027 to Bottom Out and Recover
Multiple outlets reported on November 1 that the China Passenger Car Association expects 2026 full-year passenger-car retail at about 18.5 million units, down roughly 22% year on year, after September and October retail both fell more than 20% and the once-reliable peak season effect faded into a likely new normal. CPCA sees the domestic market bottoming in 2027 with retail growth in a 0%-5% range and a mean around 2%, implying a cyclical trough followed by a mild recovery. The shift reflects China's auto market leaving incremental expansion for a stock-competition phase, where product iteration is rapid, homogenization is rising, and brands must compete on self-developed barriers, personalization and brand strength rather than seasonal promotions or price cuts.
