Why Wuzhen Put Open Source in the Spotlight: China's AI Shifts From 'Borrowing Boats' to 'Building Boats'
This year's Wuzhen summit put "open source" in the absolute center, a Qianjiang commentary noted on November 2, with the theme "Open Source and Openness, Co-Build and Share." China's first open-source themed experience pavilion opened November 1, led by the Cyberspace Administration and Xinhua and built with Zhejiang authorities. The "Zhejiang open-source trio" - the Zhijiang Lab 021 scientific foundation model, DeepSeek and Qwen - appeared together; Zhijiang's 021 completed training and opened a 236-billion-parameter model using a MoE plus OneTokenizer architecture, filling a domestic gap in AI scientific foundation models. The ModelScope community has become China's largest model-open-source hub, OceanBase has opened over 5 million lines of core code in five years with 200,000-plus deployments, and Ant has open-sourced its LingBot embodied model with 2.2 million downloads. The commentary framed open source as China's shift from building apps on others' ecosystems to opening its own foundation so standards and discourse grow domestically.
