Volkswagen to Export China-Developed Cars and Technology to South America and South Africa
Volkswagen Group announced in Hefei on Oct 28 a strategic shift to push technology developed in China to overseas markets, with first targets including South America and South Africa, exporting more China-made Volkswagen and Jetta-brand models in coming years. The compact main platform (CMP) and China electronic architecture (CEA), jointly developed by VW's Hefei R&D center with Chinese partners, will land first in South America by the end of the decade. VW said it aims to transform its China business from a "profit engine" into an efficient, low-cost R&D and export base, using China as a key innovation center to strengthen global competitiveness, a reversal of the decades-long "in China, for China" model.
