EU Pure-Electric Sales Exceed Gasoline and Diesel Combined for First Time in August
Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) shows that in August, EU battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations surpassed gasoline and diesel combined for the first time: BEVs took a 27.7% share versus 18.9% for gasoline and 6.4% for diesel, totaling 25.3% for the two fuels. Across 31 European countries including the UK and Norway, about 243,000 BEVs were registered, up 52.2% year on year. In the first nine months, the EU BEV share rose to 22.7% from 16.1% a year earlier, while gasoline and diesel combined fell to 28.2% from 36.9%. Analysts credit high oil prices, aggressive Chinese pricing and various subsidies, even as hybrids still lead at about 36% cumulative share.
