BYD More Than Triples European Sales in October to Overtake Tesla as Europe's EV Registrations Rise for Fourth Month
European new-car registrations rose 4.9% year on year to 1.09 million in October, the fourth straight monthly gain, lifted by demand for affordable pure electrics, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Pure-electric registrations jumped nearly 33% and plug-in hybrids 40%, while BYD's sales more than tripled, comfortably overtaking Tesla, whose volume fell 48%. The data points to Chinese brands gaining share in Europe even amid tariffs and local-content requirements. Domestically, the China Passenger Car Association said September NEV retail penetration hit a record 67% and held at 65.7% in the first 25 days of October, with NEV having moved from policy-driven to product-driven adoption. Analysts cautioned that high penetration alongside weak total volume shows electrification is a structural trend rather than a total-market expansion, and that local compliance and trade barriers will decide whether the overseas heat continues.
