Facing a flood of Chinese-built complete vehicles, Thailand plans to raise the consumption tax on imported pure electric vehicles from the current 10% to 35% to spur local carmaking, Industry Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said. The cabinet approved the BEV tax plan on November 3, with the new rate taking effect January 1. The move reflects growing pressure on Southeast Asian markets as Chinese EV exports surge, and signals a policy shift from import incentives toward local production and supply-chain building across the region.
